A bit about me

Hello! My name is Enrique Smith and I am happy to meet ya’ll! I am a Licensed Psychologist (PSY.6472) who received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. After which, I completed my PhD in Counseling Psychology at the University of Iowa (Go Hawkeyes!). During my time in graduate school I primarily worked in university counseling centers, and community mental health centers. This time was spent helping folx who held a wide range of multiculturally diverse, intersectional identities ages 18 to 65 who struggled with a variety of difficulties including: Depression, Anxiety, Identity Related Concerns, Multicultural Concerns, Life Transitions, Adjustment Concerns, Family of Origin Concerns, Stress, and Grief/Bereavement. This training provided me with the competence and confidence to work with most any client that seeks my help. However, my expertise lies in working with those who seek to navigate multicultural concerns within the context of therapy as well as clients from communities of color and other marginalized communities.

In the therapy work, I utilize interventions and modalities related to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT). However, the core of my therapy practice most aligns with the Person-Centered Therapy model, which focuses on the client’s unique experiences and perceptions of the world. My core belief in the therapy space is that a person’s distress comes from incongruence in their life. Incongruencies between the actual self and the ideal self,  which can manifest as psychological, emotional and/or physiological distress. I believe that it is my job as your therapist to help you explore, identify, and understand these incongruences in your life so that you can make the meaningful changes needed to achieve the growth you are seeking.

While being a therapist is one of my great passions in life there is also a lot that interests me outside of the therapy space including: tattoos, collecting sneakers and watching basketball (Go Boston Celtics!). I am also a big fan of anime, video games and reading. I love to spend my free-time immersing myself in the plot of a fantasy story whether through gaming or reading and find that it is something that helps me to fill my cup at the end of a long day.
